Our history
For more than 40 years, Nicorette products have been helping people become smoke-free. But the origins of Nicorette stretch back even further.
In 1967, two physicians from Lund in Sweden, working for Leo Pharmacia – Claes Lundgren and Stephan Lichtneckert – came up with an idea for a new product that would reduce symptoms of nicotine withdrawal.
At the time, nicotine cravings were affecting the concentration levels of submarine and aeroplane crews. Their idea aimed to provide a solution – a chewing gum that contained nicotine but without the other products found in cigarettes.
It took years of research and development, but in 1978 the first nicotine chewing gum was launched in Switzerland.
Between 1990 and 2008, further Nicorette products were launched, including a patch, inhaler and microtab.
2011 to 2018 saw the launch of our first Nicorette mouthspray and mint lozenges, followed by our fruit lozenges and fruit mouthspray products.
Today, Nicorette products are available in more than 50 countries around the world. And we continue to research, develop, and produce new products that are clinically proven to help you quit smoking.
